I was inspired at the Women’s Integrative Health conference last weekend by the true women pioneers that are expanding the boundaries of Western medicine in so many ways. Initially women physicians had to play the game the way men have played it in order to be accepted. Now women are bringing the feminine qualities to the profession and standing behind what they know is good medicine for their patients. Women who have come out the other side of the women’s movement have the courage to break free from a hierarchical system that places doctors above patients. Instead, they create a healing alliance with the patient, listening deeply. Cultivating wholeness is a collaborative effort that is laced with compassion and caring.
Of course they welcome alternative treatments that can be effective but what they find is that the true healer is happiness and a sustainable lifestyle. When we balance work, rest, and play, eat whole healthy foods, and move our bodies on a regular basis, health can be recovered and maintained. Wouldn’t it be sweet to go to a doctor’s office where you could also meet with a life coach, an herbalist, a nutritionist, and a massage therapist, all of whom collaborate with you and each other to support you in the healing process? Welcome to the possibility of community healing! Dream this along with me into a positive future for humankind.
